Tuesday May 2nd, 1854 A pleasant day. I had my pants cut out. Was early at the "We all"(?) & even had the ornament send assunder(?). I waited until noon. Thankfully(?) most days I feel rather tired - slept a short while today. I was up at the "Temperance Hall" in the afternoon - escorted Miss Ella Brawford home. I then prepared to take stage. I only had (?) & left. Came up on Burks line. Miss Fellows & Polly gave me cake. I have plenty. I paid Miss Fellows all the money I had - $48.00. She has been very kind to me. I was in the farm about dusk & she & Miss Ella came in. I escorted Miss Ella home again with pleasure. I was back again soon & assumed in shelling beans - I was then in the (?) (?) the stage coach. I living(?) so anxious to go that without saying farewell I put(?) I reached home about 10. Rained a little tonight - a little storm. |

Wednesday. May 3, 1854 A very cold damp day. The Boys are planting corn. I have performed Consius Bosc. I was ready to win(?) B today, but hands efficient (?) my service. J.R.L a letter from learter(?) J. Dickinson - I motion (?) to Mr. John B. Dickinson - one to Hannah Walton - one to Miss Fellows - the other to Simon 4L. I have spent the day in waiting(?). Thursday, May 4. 1854 I was at Town. L.S. One to Annie. Miss Fellows. Hannah. & Dickinson. 4 in all. I had my hair cut off. Purchased 2 lemons. Gave Miss Harris some cake. I rode Bay mare. I have been hard at work today whitewashing. The mountain is on fire - a beautiful sight. I was chewing tabacco - an hour. |

Friday May 5. 1854 -- Saturday May 6. 1854 L,,S,, to David H. Walton - Lena and myself now up to Old Jacob Lutz's and brought a red steer(?) & a white cow horse which Father purchased at the sale. Steer(?) = 27$ horse(?) 18$ cost. We had no trouble with them. I put (?) button in my bon(?) and send to dorm - by Michi Burman. I have been chewing tobacco - as my tooth is sore. Lost the minute hand from my watch last night. I was at the Blacksmith shop with Bill & the Smith (?). Part of the afternoon I was sleeping = rather cool this evening. |

Sunday. May. 7 1854 Monday May 8th. 1854 (?) a pleasant day - ascited(?) in planting corn in the little orchard part of the day was consumation(?) & in reading was a little to Miss Fellows - making in all $48.50. The court did not grant any (?)(?)(?). Tuesday May 9. 1854 L.S to Miss Fellows - a beautiful day. Faith is at (?) - so go to Winchester & about one got in the mail stage. I was at Town this afternoon - was at Mr. Pennybackers - had some lemonade made. If (?) about 2 hours - Sol. & I came home in the rain. Hollis & Sol staid all night with us - Sol & I were at the river - Sol caught one (?) - & I caught 2 (?). We came home about 8. I have (?)(?) today. The Boys have been turning out in the river. |

Wednesday. May 10. 1854 Thursday. May. 11th 1854 R,,L From Miss Fellows. Purchased linen for a coat at Koontz. Paid the lender(?) 50 cents for cutting. Spent a short time with Miss Boon(?) & Maggie - also called to a Miss Maggie - gave Mrs. Harris 20 cents. Saw William Moore - intend going up this evening. Purchased 1/2 (?) bag - 5 cents. 4 yards of linen - 9 - 50 -+ 3/4 yard 9 + (?) = 65 cents in all. Boys pining(?) fines between Lenis (?) aimed this afternoon. William Flanagan(?) sent with me in I have (?) to Move(?). Find any your at Walton & Moore chop. (?) men fart. |

Friday May 12. 1854 Saturday May 13. 1854. R,,L some Mrs. E.B. Allen made a sheath for my bowie knife. Brought some cabbage plants & Egg plants home - was to dinner at Mary's. Spent the afternoon whitewashing - was at the river with my gun & reading - washed all over tonight. |

Sunday May 14. 1854 Monday. May 15. 1854 I have been planting corn all day - (?) out during the afternoon - my throat is sore tonight & much granted - I am not the least tired - I covered corn during the afternoon with George & the instrument. We were planting the field in front of Rhesa Hawkings house. Two (?) - commenced this morning & (?) finish tommorrow. I have ahead much tobacco. A beautiful day - Sam (?) purchased our sheep. 18 for $65. |

Tuesday May 16, 1854.. L..S. to Mrs. Duncis(?) Mullen _ I walked up to Town - purchased some linen for parts - 5 yards 1/6 = 1/5 + trimmings = in all $1.06 = I was in the stage with Miss Mary Jane - up to M. Rudis - I had quite a pleasant ride. I was reading & sleeping during the afternoon. After tea I walked home to Mary Jackson & I spent the greater portion of the evening at Koontz - Miss Maggie & Bod - also I was singing(?). Maggie & I had a noisey time - playing OC. She hummed rather hard. I slept with Same Kongine(?). Bought 2 lemons & made lemonade at Rudes. Wednesday May 17. 1854. R,,L From H. Walton - very warm last night. Slept without any cover. Took Breakfast at Pennybackers & came home about 8 1/2. Bought 4 lemons.._ rather windy this morn. Though very warm last night.. This has been quite a windy day - & cool. I have been reading & sleeping _ I feel so mystified(?). The wheat in superb juice cooks fine - also the sandy Filo(?) & in both sides of the lane. The wheeling suspension Bridge was blown down by a storm today. It cost 160.000 - & the last mile (?)(?). |

Thursday May 18. 1854.. L,,S,, A pleasant day. Though rather windy - spent the day in reading - rode to Town & brought Miss Harris down. The Boys are making fence down in the Inland. (?) L,,S,, to Susan Boon. Bradys Mills. Alleghany (?). Mrs. Harris staid all night. _ A delightful evening _ I have been chewing a great deal of tobacco - Bought 6 1/4 (?). Lena is making my pants - The wheat is growing finely almost autern(?) heads. Loom is up 2/12 +3 inchs. My throat is still sore - I have been shooting caterpillers with my pistol. Friday. May 19. 1854.. A Beautiful morning. I arose about 4 oclock.. Frosty. My throat pains me some - ran out hunting & fishing - killed & caught._ In the afternoone. I assisted in taking fence down in the big field _ Post & rail fence he dragged & brush & put in & (etc.). After tea - I took some butter too. Farmed to be sent to Winchester. Paid 25 - spent the money (?) at Mr. Koontzs - came home about 10 - my throat is very sore & I have contracted a serious cold. Took 3 pills. Returned about 10 1/2. Mrs. Pennybacker presented me with a bunch of Rhubarb. Serenade in Town. Lem Bio arranged & went off today. Father sold the Bay Mare colt (^ 4 years old) to Filar Mines in Pense for $135.00. |

Saturday. May 20th 1854 , A Beautiful day. I feel rather unwell. - a very severe cold - & my throat still is somewhat painful - bumps larger - I spent the morning in reading. D. Koontz was to see Henry Bultis he is sick. Jacob Rily came up to (?) Logans. Look - as it has busted open - the hoof. ray Lame. Lena made some nice rubarb pies - put a lemon in. I washed & put on some clean clothes after dinner. My idea of shooting caterpillars is a first rate plan. We instructed (?) Reuben Walton & Ameria(?) to stop and take tea with us - but were sadly disappointed. I was up at John Kislins - saw Miss Susan Leona & Aames Creamer. (?) stayed all night with us. I took 3 pills. Sunday, May.. 21st. 1854 A little rain in the morning. I was at the office. My throat is much better today & cold too... I have spent much time in reading. Its now noon & rather warm - during the after noon. I was reading & sleeping. After tea I rode over to Rhesa Hawkins & then to Town. Miss Baird preached. I escorted Miss Maggie to church - came home near 11 oclock. |

Monday. May 22nd,, 1854.. A nice day. '' Was at the carding machine._ Father sent 30 cattle over to Rhesa Hawkin's Farm - over the mountain. I have been whitewashing the garden railways. The Boys are still making fence & hauling rock. Henry & Sanders have been replanting & harvesting the corn in old orchard. Grable. Same. took the sheep off to day. 11 for $65. Tuesday. May 23rd'' 1854 I have been diligently at work today - hauling rock. chopping wood & making fence at the river. Was at Town this morn & made a purchase for Mother & (etc). A tin Bucket & (etc). This has been a very cold damp day - my (?) (?) an increase - North growing please pardon me for this intrusion upon your kindness should if not meet with your kind - approbation - for I find it unforgivable to refrain from holding communication with the maid & the claus(?) that here so brightly in the (?) |

Wednesday May 24th'' 1854 R,, L. from David H. Walton. Margarat had a baymare colt last night. I finished whitewashing today - was engaged for a short time in get crouting(?) out of the wheat - wrote a letter for Becca.,, It commenced raining this after noon - and rained all night. I have been reading the life of Davy Crockett. Thursday May 25th'' 1854 '' rained very rapidly this morning - Margaret's colt died today - I Polled at the Election of Mr. Dickson - record 79 votes in all - Gave Lena my wates in the way of certificate. Visited Miss Maggie during the evening & had a glorious time - slept with Judge Bowman - Dined at Pennybackers - but did not get any supper - chewed minute(?) tobacco - Mr,, Pennybacker came home - Purchased 1/6 package tobacco - Life is made of its cares & sorrows - its afflictions & troubles - but I have (?) to be all as pleasantly as I can - yielding only to the wisdom & will of him who directeth all things for the best. |

Friday May 26th, 1854 Came home this morning about 4 oclock & eat my breakfast about 8. I have spent some time in reading the rest of my time in work & overseeing - hauled the colt(?) out in the woods. The Boys are harvesting - replanting & planting corn. The sun was partly in eclipse about 3 oclock. I attended singing at 9. with Miss Maggie - Saturday May 27th 1854 Was at the Mill & carding machine - with the little wagon & George horse. = assisted Lem in hauling & cutting bean polls. Shot a crane & broke its leg - but could not find it in the woods. Hauled out a load of rock on the pike - I was a short time cutting rock out of the wheat field. I am so much annoyed from the bruised(?) etc. at our meals on table that I often think I will leave or get a house & wife & life quickly for I love to see order in every think - I dislike to see every thing(?) in confusion & to be hurried so - But so long as the table is set by Old Becca no please smile be enjoyed. Mr. Kern was at out house today to see Lem. |

Sunday May 28th 1854 I have been stay since morning at home for I have no where(?) to ride therefore I remain at home - I would not talk as some of my relatives do - about other persons - I think Mary Always takes the worst side of my care. But I have no objective. and remain the same - only my opinion of her - It is (?) that - Lena does not weak so dille(?) gently & she need not express hearsay so - I take care of my own business & therefore dont trouble them. During the past week I have weakened dilligently. The women folks run me much about Miss Maggie - Lem never offers his house to me - but milo(?) loan him to others.. I would certainly leave her if it was not for the respect & love I have for my parents. After then I road to Thrushing Mr. Thomas - I escorted Miss Maggie to church & home. Becca rode home behind me. |

Monday May 29,, 1854. I have been engaged all day in hauling stones & rocks for the fence - with George K. & John Dickinson(?) - also rails - banked(?) very hard. A beautiful day - rather warm. Leol.(?) Conns child died today. Tuesday May 30 .1854. Worked dilligently all day - hauling rails & stones - wa at the Bl.s. shop. It seemed rainy - very hard just about dank until later in the night in fact rained all night - I met Mary Moore, heard(?) leal Conn's baby was intimed(?) to day. Wednesday May 31. 1854 R,,L Very windy & rainy - after very cold - The Boys even working in the rain until noon fixing the fence - During the after noon I was sorting potatoes.
