Friday January 6th 1854

(1st verse)
Round the meadows am a ringing
The darkies mournful song.
While the mocking bird is singing
Happy as the day is long.
When the ivy is a creeping
Over the grassy mound
There old massa is a sleeping
Sleeping in the cold cold ground.
(Chorus)
Down in the cornfields
Hear that mournful sound
All the darkies are a moping
Massa’s in the cold cold ground
(2nd verse)
When the Autumn’s leaves were falling
When the days were cold
T’was hard to hear old massa calling
Cause he was so weak and old.
Now the orange tree is blooming
On the sandy shore
For the summer days are coming
Massa moves calls no more
(Chorus)
Massa made the darkies love him
He always was so kind.
Now they sadly weep above him
Mourning for he leaves them behind
I can not work before tomarrow
So many tear drops flow
I try to drive away my –
Picking on the old banjo.

Nelly Bly (song)

Nelly Bly! Nelly Bly! Bring your broom along,
We’ll sweep the kitchen clean, my dear,
And have a little song.
Poke the wood, my lady love
And make the fire burn,
And while I take the banjo down,
Just give the mush a turn
(Chorus)
Hi, Nelly Bly! Ho Nelly!
Listen, love, to me,
I’ll sing for you and play for you
A dulcet melody.

Nelly Bly has a voice like a turtle dove,
I hear it in the meadow and I hear it in the grove.
Nelly Bly has a heart warm as a cup of tea,
And bigger than the sweet potatoes down in Tennessee.

Nelly Bly shuts her eye when she goes to sleep.
When she wakens up again her eyeballs start to peep.
The way she walks, she lifts her foot,
And then she bumps it down;
And when it lights, there’s music there
In the part of town.

Nelly Bly! Nelly Bly! Never, never sigh;
Never bring the tear drop to the corner of your eye.
For the pie was made of pumpkins
And the mush is made of corn,
And there’s corn and pumpkins plenty, loce,
A- lyin’ in the barn.
