Enlisted in U.S. Navy, 1917.

Activities
Member of the Medieval Academy, the Modern Language Association of America, and the Athletic Association.

Involvement with Dickinson College
Stephens joined the Dickinson faculty in 1929 as an Associate Professor of English Literature. He taught three English classes during the 1933-1934 school year1. In addition to teaching he was a faculty advisor to Alpha Sigma Gamma, a Journalistic Honor Society and the 1934 Microcosm. He was also the soccer coach.
