Forest near Ypres. Ypres saw significant fighting throughout the war with several significant battles. It was one of the first places gas was ever used as a weapon during the war.

 The Somme was the site of a British offensive on 1 July till 18 November 1916. In a five day pre-assault bombardment, over 1,732,873 shells were fired at the Germans. Even so, the British suffered 57,470 casulties on the first day alone.
