Dickinson’s East
College underwent a major renovation at a cost of $1,171,432
between 1968 and 1971, becoming, once completed, the Bernard Center for
the Humanities. The renovated building was named in honor of B. A.
and Reba S. Bernard, whose foundation pledged the $334,000 gift that made
the renovation possible. The Bernard Center, which was designed by
Howell Lewis Shay and Associates, was officially dedicated on April 24,
1971. The entrance lobby of the building is a memorial to Charles
Keller Zug, class of 1880, and the second floor includes the Conway Library,
named for Moncure
Daniel Conway, class of 1849.
The building, although no longer known as the
Bernard Center, having reverted to its historic "East College," is still
home to the humanities, housing the Classical Studies, English, Philosophy
and Religion Departments. |
